About the Authors


Heath Brown

Heath Brown is assistant professor of political science at Roanoke College. He earned his master’s and doctorate from George Washington University. He studies American politics, public policy, and interest groups. The author would like to acknowledge the support of an internal grant received from Roanoke College and the research assistance of Sophie Huemer and Emma Wilson.

Naomi Goldberg

Naomi Goldberg received a Master of Public Policy from the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy at the University of Michigan. She is now the Peter J. Cooper Public Policy Fellow at The Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law. Her research focuses on sexual orientation public policy.

Brian Holuj

Brian Holuj will receive his Master of Public Administration and Master of Arts in International Relations from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University in June, 2009. During his graduate studies, Brian served as a Harold Rosenthal Fellow at the Pentagon and interned at the U.S. Embassy in Baku, Azerbaijan. Upon graduation, he looks forward to starting his civil service career as a Presidential Management Fellow with the U.S. Department of Energy.

Linnea Laestadius

Linnea Laestadius is in her final semester of the Master of Public Policy program at the George Washington University. She graduated summa cum laude from American University with a Bachelors of Arts in Economics in 2006. Linnea's concentration is health policy, and she will continue to pursue this line of study as a health policy Ph.D. student at Johns Hopkins University in the fall of 2009. Her primary interests are in the social and political determinants of health.

Malisa Lee

Malisa Lee is currently a doctoral candidate in the Center for the Study of Higher Post-Secondary Education at the University of Michigan. She received her Master of Arts degree in Education from the Rossier School of Education at the University of Southern California while working at the Gould School of Law as the Student Programs Advisor. Her research interest focuses primarily on college preparation, access, and equity.

Josh Linden

Josh Linden previously worked as a volunteer coordinator for Amnesty International's Israel Section. After graduating from James Madison University with a B.A. in International Affairs and Middle Eastern Communities and Migrations, he served as an Editorial Intern with the American Prospect magazine. Upon completion of the program, he returned to JMU to complete a graduate certificate in International NGO Management. Josh is currently serving as the 2009/2010 Jeremiah Fellow with Jews United for Justice in Washington D.C.

Christine Osowski

Christine Osowski is a Master’s student in Georgetown University’s Security Studies Program. She received her B.A. in political science and international studies from American University. Christine is currently a Consultant at the Avascent Group, a strategic management consultancy in Washington, DC, where she supports clients in the defense and energy industries.
